RECLAIMED BAKERY DWELLING PROPOSAL
With the family home lost in the devastating 2020 bushfires and still without a place to feel at home, unorthodox solutions have been considered. The bakery that had been an administration space for the small scale regenerative farm presented itself as an intriguing option. The proposed changes to the building create a loft bedroom to best utilse the generous roof section.
A glass atrium like space aims to bring some of the outside indoors, the rustic wood is retained and highlighted, and raw steel tie in the purposeful and past industrial nature of the space. A simple small bathroom that is all abilities accessible to Australian standards uses corrugated iron to tie in with the patina of the roof. The inside of the roof will be clad, ensuring the insulation has another layer to prevent unwanted solar gain and heat loss. The stairway and railing would be fabricated and have been placed to take up the least amount of room possible. The old metal on site used for window shades on the east side as there is less overhang, and for the shading of the circular feature window in the loft. An industrial kitchen gives a robust purposefulness.
The overall aim was to be practical, simple, raw, cost effective and with the option to do as much DIY as possible.
